わたしだけがあなたの助力を求めていた時は
わたしの詩だけがあなたのエレガントな上品さを謳っていた
だが今やわたしの優美な詩篇も影響力を弱め
わたしのインスピレーションもほかの詩人にその座をゆずっている、
恋人よ、あなたの愛らしさが
より優れた詩人の労苦に値することを認める
ただあの詩人があなたに関して作り出した詩篇はと言えば
彼はそれをあなたから奪いあなたに返したのだ、
彼はあなたに美徳を貸し与える、だがその言葉は
あなたの振舞いから彼が盗んだものだ、彼は美を与える、
だがそれは彼があなたの顔に見出したものだ、彼があなたに与えうる称賛は
もともとあなたが備えていたものに対してだけだ、
だからあなたは彼の詩に感謝する必要はない
なぜなら彼があなたに負っているものはあなた自身が支払うのだから。

Whilst I alone did call upon thy aid,
My verse alone had all thy gentle grace;
But now my gracious numbers are decayed,
And my sick Muse doth give an other place.
I grant, sweet love, thy lovely argument
Deserves the travail of a worthier pen;
Yet what of thee thy poet doth invent
He robs thee of, and pays it thee again.
He lends thee virtue, and he stole that word
From thy behaviour; beauty doth he give,
And found it in thy cheek: he can afford
No praise to thee, but what in thee doth live.
Then thank him not for that which he doth say,
Since what he owes thee, thou thyself dost pay.
